Promethazine (Phenergan)

Phenergan is used for relief of allergy symptoms and to prevent and control pain and nausea during and after surgery.

Drug Uses

Phenergan is used for relief of allergy symptoms, including hives and nasal congestion. It is used to prevent and control pain and nausea during and after surgery. It is also used to help produce light sleep, and for the prevention of motion sickness. Phenergan is not to be used to treat asthma. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

How Taken

Use Phenergan as directed by your doctor. To avoid stomach upset take Phenergan with a meal. If Phenergan is taken for motion sickness, take a dose at least 30 to 60 minutes before you begin traveling. Consult your doctor regarding the dosage suitable for you.

Warnings/Precautions

Before taking Phenergan, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if you have allergies to medicines, if you are allergic to any ingredient in Phenergan, if you have nervous system problems, bone marrow depression, heart problems, a blood disease, glaucoma, increased eye pressure, low blood pressure, liver problems, prostate problems, Parkinson disease, seizures, or Reye syndrome, if you regularly consume large amounts of alcohol, if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast–feeding. If you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Phenergan during pregnancy. Phenergan passes into breast milk. If you are or will be breast–feeding while you are using Phenergan, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby. Some medicines may interact with Phenergan. Therefore tell your doctor of all prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement that you are taking. Do not use Phenergan if you have a severe central nervous system depression or are in a coma, or if you are also taking astemizole, cisapride, terfenadine, or tramadol. Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a potentially deadly syndrome associated with Phenergan. Symptoms include increased body heat, muscle rigidness, altered mental abilities, including lack of response to your surroundings, irregular pulse and blood pressure, increased heart rate, sweating, irregular heart rhythm. Contact your doctor at once if any of these symptoms occur. Phenergan may cause increased sensitivity to the sun. Avoid exposure to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to Phenergan. Use a sunscreen or protective clothing if you must be outside for a prolonged period. Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the effects of the drug. These patients may require a lower dose or special monitoring during treatment. Do not use Phenergan in children under 2 years of age. Serious, and sometimes fatal, side effects (difficult or slowed breathing, drowsiness leading to coma) have occurred when Phenergan has been used in children in this age group. Phenergan should also be used with extreme caution in children 2 years of age and older. The lowest effective dose should be used in children 2 years of age and older.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember. However if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the Missed Dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Possible Side Effects

Some of the Possible Side Effects are- Dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, increased or decreased blood pressure, nausea, occasional blurred vision, rash, sleepiness, vomiting. Contact your doctor if any of these or other side effects occur. If you experience any of the following serious side effects, you should seek medical attention immediately- allergic reactions (rash, hives, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), sensitivity to light, uncontrolled muscle movements, yellowing of skin or eyes.

Storage

Store Phenergan at 77 °F (25 °C), excursions permitted to 59 to 86 °F (15 to 30 °C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Phenergan out of the reach of children.

Overdose

If overdose is suspected seek medical attention immediately. Some of the symptoms of Phenergan overdose are- convulsions, dry mouth, flushing, hallucinations, and loss of consciousness, nightmares, seizures, and shortness of breath, trouble breathing, unusual drowsiness or restlessness.

More Information

Phenergan may cause drowsiness or dizziness. These effects may worsen if Phenergan is taken with alcohol or certain other medications. Use Phenergan with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to this drug. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, contact your doctor. Phenergan should be used only by the patient for whom it has been prescribed. Do not take less or more or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor
